September is here and back-to-school excitement fills the air. This time of year resonates with me deeply, reminding me of a transformative point in my life. When my youngest (twins!) graduated from high school and began their college adventure, I knew it was time for me to embrace my passion for art and enroll in art school.
Taking a leap of faith, I signed up for a program at UCSD (University of California at San Diego) called 'Art & The Creative Process'. Balancing my full-time job with classes was challenging, but I was determined. Each semester, I attended evening classes, progressively immersing myself in a curriculum that was diverse and enriching. Courses included painting, drawing, art history, photography, and mixed media techniques.
I explored countless ways to express my creativity. I met fellow artists who shared my enthusiasm. Together, we pushed each other’s boundaries and honed our skills. One moment stands out vividly: during one class, I discovered my passion for painting. This was an important moment for me because I decided to focus on painting over other disciplines. I followed my heart's desire to express through painting.
When I earned my certificate, I also gained a sense of empowerment. I felt ready to share my knowledge and passion with others, so I began teaching art journaling. This experience allowed me to connect with students and encourage them to unleash their own creativity.
Eventually, I retired from my day job and seized the chance to paint full-time. This transition was both thrilling and intimidating. However, my joy of painting and creating my artist lifestyle fueled my passion. I joined an art studio, and then created a group studio which further solidified my commitment. The collaborative environment offered me support and a dedicated space to create.
Today, I proudly maintain my own art studio in the bustling Arts District of Liberty Station in San Diego, CA. This vibrant art community gives me both friendship and collaboration with other artists and a well-lit, private studio that is my creative sanctuary. I would say that choosing to become a full-time artist has been rewarding and fulfilling beyond my expectations.
Reflecting on my journey, I see how far I have come since attending 'school' and every September is a reminder not only of the school year but of my own transformation. If you are considering a new path or just looking to take a moment to reflect, remember that it's never too late to follow your dreams. Embrace your journey and see where it leads you.
In gratitude,
Susie
