Painting for the Shows Ahead (Without Overthinking It!)

Hello You!
I’m staying busy this spring, preparing for a lineup of juried art shows and an outdoor art festival. There’s a bit of thoughtful organizing and planning as I sift through my paintings and make my choices. A painting accepted in a show may require delivery, need to stay for the duration of the show, and then be picked up. While juggling a few different shows might seem challenging, I love a good chart. I’m also a prolific artist, always creating new paintings.
The Creative Process
I always start where I am: a canvas, my mark-making tools, some paint, and a stack of papers. Even with show titles and descriptions in mind, I remember they are just starting points. I let them guide me, but my creative process allows for a flow of inspiration. This might look like change to others, but for me, it feels like moving energy. I’m making marks, painting, and collaging with what makes me feel alive and present in the moment.
Embracing Self-Care
I’m also giving myself permission to miss a deadline if I’m not ready. That’s not me being careless; it’s me protecting myself. That moment of clarity I get when my painting doesn’t fit the show title, description, or due date is a form of self-care. I want to submit when there’s been a real thought process behind it, when the choices are honest, and the painting has earned its place.
The Journey Ahead
For now, I’m starting with what I have, staying open, and letting my creative process be the point of my practice. Art shows are always coming, and I’m coming too... on purpose, and in my own time.
Looking Forward
Stay tuned for announcements of gallery shows and art festivals! I’m excited to share this journey with you. Each piece I create is a reflection of my thoughts and feelings, and I hope they resonate with you.
In gratitude,
Susie
