Intentional Living Through Art & Creativity

Hello You!

Earlier this month I was noticing an anxiety in my heart, the slightest tightening of my outlook (not a physical pain - no worries there) but something felt amiss. After some q&a with my soul I realize I was expecting too much, too soon from my new year plans/ideas/goals/resolutions/etc.

I, of all people, know that creating a life is not something that happens all at once. It unfolds slowly over many seasons. As time passes, what I want and need naturally changes so I was able to settle myself with the knowing that it's ok to slow down. I took an honest look at where my energy was going and made adjustments as necessary. I know my reflections aren't setbacks, they're part of the creative process of living.

Just as in art, the creative process of my life is always in motion. There's no final goal or destination. Only a continuous flow of energy that I move with and within. When I feel strongly that something is ‘off-course’, I can use my creative tools of painting, writing and contemplation to stop measuring my progress and simply be in the present moment. I'm willing to be honest with myself in defining what a beautiful life looks like for me.

Creativity isn’t something I have to add onto my life, it’s the center of my life.

I’ve learned to leave room for the quieter joys, spending time with my family, hiking, tending to my garden and taking walks along the beach. These moments ground me, restore my energy, and feed my creative work in ways I can’t always explain. They remind me that inspiration doesn’t come from pushing harder toward some "new year resolution', but from paying attention to everyday moments. (Just so you know, my goals and plans weren’t wrong but my expectation that they could be realized in a short few weeks was what needed correcting!)

This season of creating with intention has found its way into my studio practice and I’m excited to share what’s been emerging!

These are fresh off my easel, left to right, 'Some Assembly Required', 'Tempting Fate' and 'Coming To Life'.

I also feel better having written this post. There's something about writing that gets things stirred up inside, whether they need attention or not!

I'm excited about what this year will bring and hope you enjoy reading and following along. Forward this email to a friend if you'd like!

I'll be in my studio for First Friday Open Studios on February 6th from 4-7pm if you'd like to come and say hi!

In gratitude,

Susie

“Some Assembly Required” hits the spot Susie! Something about the history of this painting, color palette and composition is really eye-catching. Thanks for sharing your thoughts … I too have been experiencing similar awakenings regarding expectations. Making adjustments and anticipating what will emerge is exciting.

Thanks Lisa, I really like the way the composition came together in "Some Assembly Required".
